Guiding Principles
Because researchers share the labs, equipment, and support, a number of principles have been established that apply to all researchers in all SSH Labs. Failure to comply with these principles will result in the researcher in question being denied access.
- The primary goal is to conduct efficient and high-quality behavioral science research with optimal use of SSH lab space and equipment.
- The SSH Labs can be used for all human-related research within Leiden University. This can lead to new collaborations, insights, and knowledge sharing.
- The SSH Lab Manager[1], in close collaboration with SSH Research and Lab Support, is the administrator of the labs and equipment and also coordinates the purchase of equipment and consumables.
- The lab and/or research technicians install and/or remove the research setups in close consultation with the researcher. The researcher does not do this themselves.
- Researchers who wish to use the labs must have ethical approval[2], an approved data management plan (DMP), a privacy plan, and a certificate of conduct (VOG) if research is conducted with vulnerable groups (e.g., minors or patients). The costs associated with this are borne by the researcher.
- The researchers' faculty is responsible for the research conducted by researchers within its own faculty, even if this is carried out in one of the SSH labs. This means that the ethics, data management plan, and privacy must be checked and approved by the researcher's own faculty. If the researcher's own committees have any questions, they can seek advice from colleagues at the Faculty of Social Sciences.
- The liability of UL (including insured employees and students) is insured for property damage and personal injury suffered by third parties, including consequential damage. In other words, if a participant suffers damage for which UL is liable, this is in principle covered by the business liability insurance.
- The researchers are responsible for their own research, but must comply with the established rules and protocols. These can be found on the SOLO wiki.
- The researchers must leave the equipment and rooms clean, complete, and in good condition. If something has gone wrong, this must be reported to the lab manager.
- The principal investigators are responsible for ensuring that their researchers are aware of the protocols and are trained to use the equipment.
The Lab Manager and SSH Research and Lab Support discuss new applications/requests for extensions for lab and equipment once a week.
[1] If a participating faculty has in-house labs, this task will be taken over by the faculty's own lab manager and support staff.
[2] Research that falls under the Medical Research Involving Human Subjects Act (WMO) must be reviewed in advance by a recognized METC or the CCMO.
