JATOS SURFconext Migration Instructions
JATOS SURFConext Account Migration Instructions (English)
Approximate time: 15 min
From 12 August 2025 onwards, we will switch to a new way of signing in to JATOS with SURFconext. When you first sign in to JATOS with SURFconext, you will automatically receive a new account. Your old data (such as studies or results) can unfortunately not be transferred automatically. For this reason, we ask you to follow the below steps yourself in order to transfer your information and data.
Do this before October 13th. After this date, old (non-SURFConext) accounts will be deactivated and eventually deleted.
In case you have any questions, or you require assistance, please contact labsupport@fsw.leidenuniv.nl.
Creating a SURFconext user account in JATOS
Before you can start transferring your data, your SURFconext user account must be created in JATOS first. The first time you sign in with SURFconext, this user account is created automatically.
- To sign in with SURFconext, nagivate to https://jatos.services.universiteitleiden.nl/jatos/signin and then click “Sign in with SURFconext“.
- The first time you log in with SURFconext you will be prompted to “Review your information that will be shared with JATOS”. Here you can just click on “Proceed to JATOS Universiteit Leiden”.
- After signing in, check the username which has been assigned to you by clicking on your name in the top right corner. The username is in bold letters, and contains an @ sign, for instance doej@leidenuniv.nl. Copy this username and save it somewhere. Also note the full name associated with this account, as shown in brackets next to the username, for instance (J.D. Doe).
- Now sign out again (click “Sign out“). You can now start transferring your data to your new SURFconext user account.
Transferring data to a new SURFconext user account
First make a list of all JATOS user accounts you have, which have data (studies) you would like to transfer. Such a user account can be one with your UCLN name (for example, “doej“ or “s1234567“) as the username and/or a user account with your email address (for example, “j.doe@umail.leidenuniv.nl“) as the username (local authentication). Most users have only one user account, but there are users who have multiple accounts. If you are unsure how many or which accounts you have, please contact labsupport@fsw.leidenuniv.nl.
Execute the below steps for each of the user accounts on your list.
- Sign in (at https://jatos.services.universiteitleiden.nl/jatos/signin) to the user account in question. Pay attention: for this you fill the “Username“ and “Password“ fields and then you click “Sign in“, so you do not click the button for SURFconext.
- Click “Studies“ in the top left corner.
- Decide which studies you want to transfer. Pay attention: after the deadline for transferring your data, you will lose access to all studies which you have not transferred. For the studies you do not want to transfer, you do not need to do anything.
- Click a study you want to transfer and then click “More“ → “Change users“.
- Enter the username of your new SURFconext user account and then click “Add“. Your SURFconext user account should now appear in the list. If not, check whether you entered the username correctly. Note that you will not see the username in the list, but the full name associated with your SURFconext account.

- You can close the current “Member users“ page.
- If there are more studies you want to share, go back to the Studies overview page (click on “Studies” in the top left corner), and start again from step 4. Otherwise, sign out (click your name in the top right corner, and then click “Sign out“).
Optional: export your study and data
This is a good moment to also export your collected data and your studies, so that you have a backup outside of JATOS.
- Log in to JATOS with either you new SURFconext account or your old account.
- Click on “Studies” in the top left corner and open the study which you wish to export.
- To export the study files (e.g. the OSWeb experiment): click “Export“ (next to “Properties“). A study export file can be recognized by the .jzip file format.
- To export the collected data: click the “Results“ button at the top. Select the desired results, for instance using the button “All“.
- Then click “Export Results“ and choose the desired data type. For the complete data, choose “JATOS Results Archive“. A data (results) export file can be recognized by the .zip file format.

Only for admin users: transfer admin role
If you are an admin user, you can transfer your admin role to you new SURFconext user account by following the below steps.
- Sign in to your admin account (or one of your admin accounts).
- Click “Administration“ in the top right corner, and the click “User Manager“.
- Find your new SURFconext user account (perhaps using the “Search“ field at the top of the screen) and enable the “Admin“ toggle for this user account.
- You can now sign out again.
Verify that all required data have been transferred
To verify that your data has been transferred successfully, you can follow the steps below.
- Navigate to https://jatos.services.universiteitleiden.nl/jatos/signin and click “Sign in with SURFconext“.
- When you’re signed in, click “Studies“ in the top left corner and verify that all studies you wanted to transfer appear in the list.
- TIP: When logged in with your new SURFconext account, you can remove your old account as a member from the shared studies. If you then log into JATOS with your old account, you can see right away if there are any studies you have not yet shared with the new account.
- Only for admin users: verify that the “Administration“ button in the top right corner is visible.
