Introduction

SideQuest is an application that can be used to retrieve and store files from a Meta Quest HMD and other Android devices. It can also be used to install .apk files unto the Quest, when this Quest is not managed by ArborXR.

Downloading SideQuest and connecting the HMD

SideQuest is free, and can be downloaded here when using an unmanaged computer. Make sure to download the desktop application.

Connect the Quest to your computer with an appropriate USB cable. On the Quest side this needs to be of type USB-C, and on your computer this is usually either USB-C or USB-A. The cable needs to be capable of data-transfer, and not just charging.

The Quest should already be in developer mode. If this is not the case, please contact SOSXR.

The Quest requests to be allowed to communicate with your computer. Click on 'yes', or 'allow always' wherever applicable. You will see these messages on both your computer, and inside the HMD.Once the Quest is properly connected to your computer, SideQuest should display a green light at the top left of the screen

Navigate to the 'Oculus' folder (marked red in the image above), and then to either the 'VideoShots' or the 'ScreenShots' folder, depending on whether you're looking for a screen recording or a screenshot.

Inside those folders you find any and all screen recordings / screenshots that have been made on this device. In the image below you see in red the filename: first the application name where the image was taken (or started / stopped from in the case of a video), then the year-month-day, and finally the hour-minute-second at which it was taken.

Click the corresponding 'Save' icon (marked yellow) to store the image on your computer.

The popup below will show, asking you where to store it on your device. Click 'Select Location' (green) to pick a folder on your computer. Then be sure to hit 'Save to PC' (marked orange).

Check your PC's folder to see that the image / video has been transferred correctly.

Finally, be sure to delete the shots you have taken from the device by using the 'X' button for each file (orange):

Troubleshooting

No connection

Is SideQuest showing a green light at the top left? No? Let's fix that.

A red light would indicate no connection with the HMD, whereas an orange / yellow light would indicate some type of permission error.

Red light

  • Is the headset on / awake / working?
  • Unplug and replug the cable
  • Reboot the PC and the HMD
  • Try another cable
  • Try another PC

Orange light

  • What does the message next to the orange light say? If you follow those suggestions, can you get it to work?
  • Look in the headset for a popup: accept all by hitting 'yes' or 'always'
  • Is your PC asking permission? Hit 'yes' or 'of course'
  • Unplug and replug the cable
  • Reboot both devices
